WHAT IS A CHRONIC NON-HEALING WOUND?
For most wounds, healing follows a well-orchestrated series of complex events at the cellular level. A simple cut or scrape can often be healed with mom’s TLC and a bandage. But challenging, non-healing wounds that don't proceed through the normal phases of healing need special care that is available at the Wound Care Center at River Oaks. If you have a wound that hasn’t healed in 2-3 weeks, then you might consider consulting your primary care physician about follow-up treatment at a wound care center.
CHRONIC NON-HEALING WOUNDS MAY INCLUDE:
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Venous stasis leg ulcers
- Radiation necrosis
- Preparation & preservation of skin grafts/flaps
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome & acute ischemias
- Necrotizing soft tissue infection
- Gas gangrene
- Thermal burns
At River Oaks Hospital, we are known for our family-like atmosphere and compassionate care. We use a “team approach” to promote healing. The first step in the road to recovery of a non-healing wound is an examination by our full-time medical director, Dr. Harriet Jones. Next, a specific, individualized treatment plan is designed for you by our clinicians. This plan may include specialty surgeons, other outpatient treatment or assistance from family members. The plan is then forwarded to your primary physician and your referring provider. Our treatment approach has been designed to complement the primary or referring physician’s care, not replace it. A physician has the option to call the center for an appointment for his or her patient or patients may call the center directly.
The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center at River Oaks offers multiple state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers and equipment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is recommended for certain types of wounds and other difficult-to-treat conditions. While traditional treatment options are used to improve a patient’s chance of recovery, some cases may require hyperbaric oxygen therapy. During this course of treatment, a patient lies in a closed, pressurized chamber and breathes 100% oxygen. To maintain a relaxed, comfortable state for the patient, he or she may watch movies, listen to music, or talk with staff during the process. Relaxation techniques are also available. If you think you may be a candidate for wound care or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, consult your primary care physician. A wound that hasn’t healed in over a month should not be overlooked. The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center at River Oaks is available to treat your wounds and provide the compassionate care for which River Oaks Hospital is known.
