Woman’s Hospital Designated an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

The Imaging Department at Woman’s Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).  Woman’s Hospital is one of four hospitals in Mississippi and the only hospital in central Mississippi to have this designation.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

The breast imaging services at this center are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

“Previously our mammography services have been accredited, however, we now have the unique distinction of accreditation for the entire mammography program,” said Sherry Pitts, CEO of Woman’s Hospital. “Our Imaging Department has worked extremely hard to obtain this designation.” In addition to the ACR designation, Becky Humphreys, RN, BSN, Breast Health Educator at Woman’s Hospital, has been designated as a Certified Breast Patient Navigator – Cancer (CBPN-C) by The National Consortium of Breast Centers. “Becky consults and comforts patients through their cancer diagnosis,” said Pitts. “This certification works hand in hand with the ACR designation in giving patients the highest quality care.”

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
